Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County "Kidz Fuel-Snack Pack" Program Feeds Students

The Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County “Kidz Fuel-Snack Pack” Program currently serves over 43 schools with 1095 eligible K-12 students.  Through the “Kidz Fuel-Snack Pack” Program, we hope that weekends without adequate nourishment are no longer an issue for children in households where sufficient and consistent food supplies fall short of what is needed. Our goal is to increase the number of students served to 2000.

Every Friday, the back pack program provides a back pack full of nutritious food for low income students when free meals are not available over the weekend. The CAPSBC employees, our partners and their staff, students and volunteers work with non-profit agencies that pack and deliver the food to local schools.

  • 128,000 children in San Bernardino County live in poverty and face hunger every day. More than — 22 thousand children are currently homeless.
  • 85% of students in the San Bernardino City Unified School District receive free or reduced lunch and these same children may go hungry during the weekend.

Nutrition and Test Scores

Good nutrition is important for good learning. Research has shown that children who regularly ate breakfast had better standardized test scores, better behavior, and were less hyperactive than children who skipped breakfast. Students living in poverty are least likely to benefit from the teaching and learning that is offered in our schools. Being poor means more than not having enough money for food or clothing, it means not being able to gain access to essential school supplies. According to a recent study, high school dropouts have higher rates of unemployment, lower earnings, poorer health, and increased dependence on public assistance. In the 2007/2008 school year, 22.5% 9th-12th grade youth dropped out of high school.  Children living in poverty need community based solutions. They need access to resources that can provide them with the tools and skills necessary to guarantee success.
