Helping People. Changing Lives.

Become a Volunteer

It is said that a nonprofit organization is only as good as its volunteers. That is why we at the Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County value our proficient volunteer force.

And thanks to the hundreds of committed, community-minded persons throughout our County who give of their time and talents, we are able to make a difference in the lives of countless people every year.

If you would like to join us in our noble endeavor, please click on the appropriate program below to find out more about CAPSBC volunteering opportunities.

Food Bank Volunteers- The CAPSBC Food Bank is proud of its loyal volunteer force estimated at some 1500 plus.  These committed individuals make it possible for us to reach thousands of hungry persons each month.

VITA Site Volunteers - VITA is a program administered with the IRS to help individuals with low to moderate income or over the age of 60 prepare their State and Federal income tax returns. Tax returns are prepared by trained volunteers free of charge. This service gives volunteers the opportunity to give back to the community and at the same time receive FREE income tax preparation training, a valuable skill that can be applied to their personal life and development.

CAPSBC Food Bank Volunteer

The CAPSBC Food Bank is proud of its loyal volunteer force estimated at some 1500 plus.  These committed individuals make it possible for us to reach thousands of hungry persons each month.   A majority of our volunteers are community minded retired persons who, after working hard all of their lives, have dedicated their newfound time and resources giving back to the community.

Our volunteers help in a wide variety of cities and locations.  From the large Community Centers located in the big cities of the Inland Empire, to the tiny schoolhouses located on dusty back roads in the Mojave Desert, all of our volunteers work together to assist the CAPSBC Food Bank in feeding the needy people of the Inland Empire.

How They Help

A majority of our volunteers work at one of our many affiliated non-profit agencies, that are located within the volunteer’s immediate area, such as their local community center, senior center, school or religious institution. The volunteers who work at the food giveaways provide a variety of services such as screening clients, unloading trucks, packing bags, and passing out the food.

VITA Site Volunteers

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites prepare and submit income taxes to the Internal Revenue Service and State of California Franchise Tax Board free of charge to the public.  CAPSBC operates several VITA sites in the County of San Bernardino in partnership with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).

VITA sites open each year in January and remain open throughout tax season, culminating on April 15th.

How They Help

Volunteers begin training in November for the upcoming tax season, learning how to use the tax preparation software and the many guidelines they must follow to protect the confidentiality of the financial records for their clients.  Once trained, VITA volunteers are able to help clients maximize their tax refunds. Volunteers must volunteer a minimum of 24 hours at a designated VITA site.

Would You Like to Help?

You become a VITA site volunteer if you:

  • Enjoy meeting and helping a variety of people
  • Have experience or are interested in learning about tax preparation
  • Feel comfortable using a personal computer
  • Are able to complete the IRS and State training programs

If your answer is YES, simply sumbit the Volunteer form below by December 1st to be eligible to participate as a volunteer for the following year's tax season.

Volunteer Spotlight

Many of the CAPSBC Food Bank’s volunteer’s are not unlike Mr. Charles Lewis, who at 83 years of age, continues to work hard at the CAPSBC Food Bank warehouse. “Charlie” started volunteering with CAPSBC in 1985, just one year after retiring from Kaiser Steel Corporation with forty years of service. The CAPSBC Food Bank is proud of Mr. Lewis and the hundreds of unnamed volunteers who work tirelessly assisting us in our endeavor to provide food to needy persons throughout the Inland Empire.
