HOMELESSNESS IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

Homelessness is often cited as one of the most prominent indicators of our nation’s social and economic condition. Over the past 25 years, the number of people who are homeless has increased.  In an effort to generate valid qualitative and quantitative data regarding the issue of homelessness in San Bernardino County, Community Action Partnership of San Bernardino County (CAPSBC) contracted Applied Survey Research (ASR) to conduct the 2007 San Bernardino County Homeless Count.

A total of 244 census tracts in San Bernardino County were canvassed for the street count, while the shelter count included telephone interviews, with every known emergency shelter, transitional housing facilities, and agencies that provide motel/hotel vouchers.  The second major component of the study is the comprehensive interviews of street and sheltered homeless persons conducted by trained homeless workers and service providers.  A total of 697 homeless were interviewed.

The findings of the study were released on September 25, 2007 at the San Bernardino Board of Supervisors meeting.
